VMware Cloud on AWS: Adding Connectivity, Multitenancy features Executives from Amazon Web Services (AWS), and VMware gave an update this week on their joint offering, VMware Cloud. They also discussed upcoming capabilities. Mark Lohmeyer (senior vice president of Cloud Platform at VMware) and Dave Brown (vice president of AWS Elastic Compute Cloud EC2) highlighted the rapid growth in VMware Cloud on AWS since its introduction in late 2016. VMware Cloud on AWS, a managed service that allows VMware customers to run their vSphere environments in the AWS cloud, is called VMware Cloud on AWS. According to executives, the number and number of hosts using the service have more than doubled over the past year, while the number and number of virtual machines has more than tripled. A strong partner ecosystem has developed around the product. Partners have developed more than 300 solutions to VMware Cloud on AWS and over 500 have been awarded the VMware Cloud On AWS service competency. VMware Cloud on AWS currently is available in 17 of AWS’ 24 regions. During the briefing, a slide was shown that showed typical use cases for the service. It is used by 29 percent of customers for datacenter migrations, 21 per cent for disaster recovery, and 20 percent for applications migrations. Other uses include datacenter expansion, virtual desktop infrastructure, and disaster recovery. Lohmeyer stated that AWS and VMware have been working closely together over the past four years to improve VMware Cloud on AWS, and increase its value for their joint customers. Brown and he shared five new enhancements that aim to expand the service’s customer base.

  • i3en.metal Instance Type. This new instance type is for workloads that require high storage and performance, such as datacenter migrations. The i3en.metal instance is 48 percent cheaper per GB than the i3 type while offering four times as much storage capacity.
  • Support for 2-Host Production Cluster using i3.metal Instances. Partners, MSPs, and small businesses can now benefit from this new minimum cluster configuration which reduces starting costs by one third.
  • VMware Cloud Director Service: This multitenancy option allows MSPs to support five to ten times as many customers with minimal overhead costs.
  • Support for Tanzu Kubernetes Grid
  • VMware Transit Connect: This solution automates connectivity tasks between VMware Cloud On AWS, on premises environments, and AWS virtual private cloud. It is currently in preview.

Lohmeyer stated in a prepared statement that “[W]e are accelerating innovation and broadening accessibility to VMware Cloud on AWS” to help more businesses support the needs of a wide range of enterprise applications and use case while delivering the highest economic value.
