Who invented the Six Sigma method
Motorola’s Six Sigma history can be summarized by the following. Motorola began to experiment with statistical analysis in the late 1970s. Motorola CEO Bob Galvin was struggling with foreign manufacturers in the 1980s. Senior Sales Vice President Art Sundry acknowledged that their “quality stinks”. Six Sigma was created by Bill Smith, Quality Engineer. Motorola invented the term “Six Sigma” in Bill Smith’s laboratory. Bill Smith is known as the Father of Six Sigma around the globe.
Motorola raised the defect measurement scale to parts per million, which led to the “Six Sigma” terminology. Motorola gave the Six Sigma method its name. Motorola launched its Six Sigma program in 1987. Motorola created the Six Sigma method to improve process quality and reduce defects to negligible levels.

Here’s a summary of the history of GE’s Six Sigma method: Jack Welch introduced the Six Sigma method to GE in January 1996. The Six Sigma method was first used at GE to improve the entire Business System. GE saved $750 millions by 1998’s end. GE could reduce invoice defects and disputes by 98%, speeding up payment and improving productivity. They also simplified their contract review process, which resulted in faster deals being completed and an annual savings of $1,000,000. The Six Sigma Green Belt exam was the standard for management promotions in 1998/99. Mikel Harry invented terms such as Black Belt or Green Belt in relation to Martial Arts. Today, Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt certifications are highly respected in all industries.
What are the main benefits of Six Sigma?
Six Sigma is a data-driven and disciplined approach. Six Sigma tools and techniques help to make decisions based on the facts and figures of relevant data. These decisions are not based on gut feelings or personal opinions.
Six Sigma is a method that targets high-hanging fruits. High hanging fruits are not just complex problems or hard stuff. Six Sigma addresses critical pain areas or complex problems first.
